Erikson Institute is the nation’s premier graduate school in child development. Since 1966, we’ve prepared professionals to understand and meet the changing needs of young children and their families. We focus exclusively on children from birth to age eight—the most important formative years.
Our vision is that every adult who works with young children or on their behalf will be knowledgeable, aware, skilled, and alive to the possibilities of each child’s life. We offer master’s degrees, a doctoral program, graduate certificate programs, and a wide array of professional development opportunities for those seeking to improve their practice and sharpen their skills.
Teaching adults is one way Erikson achieves its mission of improving children’s lives.
Applied research, knowledge generated by the
Herr Research Center for Children and Social Policy, direct clinical services to families, and a wide range of community engagement initiatives are others. We collaborate to improve and expand services in school districts, social service agencies, the child welfare system, courts, and health services. Each year, the work of our faculty, researchers, alumni, and students touches the lives of more than a quarter million young children.
Located in downtown Chicago, Erikson is recognized as a hub of complex, creative thinking and expertise that influences policy. Our reach and influence extends far beyond Chicago; we are at the forefront of local, state, and national discussions about how best to educate and support young children and their families.
We are expanding our online education options to reach students—and the children they serve—farther afield. Our teacher certification program at the College of DuPage improves the quality of early education in underserved communities in the Western suburbs. Also, to expand access to an Erikson education, we're now offering an online master's degree as well as infant specialist courses.
