Communication and Sensory Issues in Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Friday, December 11, 2009
9 a.m–noon
Presenter: Gail Richard, Ph.D.

The incidence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) continues to escalate, with current figures reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggesting 1 in every 150 children present with the disorder. Early intervention to address the developmental delays encompassed within the syndrome is critical.

A significant impairment in the ability to communicate is one of the diagnostic characteristics of ASD. Children with developmental delays also have difficulty with sensory modulation and processing. Children with ASD who have difficulty interpreting sensory stimuli as well as problems expressing themselves verbally often react with extreme behavioral outbursts due to frustration, confusion, and anxiety.

Richard will address how learning to interpret and address communication and sensory issues in young children with ASD can have a significant positive impact on their prognosis and success in academic and social environments.
