Noted scholars Vonnie C. McLoyd of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; Hirokazu Yoshikawa of Harvard; and Bruce Fuller of University of California, Berkeley, joined Erikson faculty for a March 23, 2007 symposium exploring this topic.
“What Head Start Can Teach Us About NCLB”
In conjunction with the American Educational Research Association annual meeting, Erikson hosted a special discussion of disturbing trends toward increasing academic drill, scripted teaching, and high-stakes testing in early childhood education. About 100 concerned professionals gathered April 7 to explore ways of focusing public conversation on the impact of these trends and restoring play and hands-on, experiential learning to the classroom.
