Applying research to public policy is Herr Research Center's mission. In addition to its publications, the center organizes a number of public events to channel new knowledge into the policy arena. These events disseminate findings from the center's original research studies and translate these and other research findings into useful information for policymakers.

Exploring PreK–3rd Grade: A Dialogue on Educational Reform
In March 2011, more than 90 leaders from early childhood and K–12 education explored the new educational possibilities suggested by the PreK–3rd grade approach. PreK–3 proposes building high-quality, coordinated systems that support and enhance teaching and learning from preschool through third grade. The event was hosted by Erikson's New Schools Project and Herr Research Center for Children and Social Policy and supported by the Joyce Foundation.

Policy forum
In 2009, Stephen Raudenbush and other key speakers discussed perspectives on showing progress in student achievement and models for increasing student achievement in light of the goals and guidelines for important education funding opportunities in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Policy roundtables
Herr Research Center Policy Roundtables facilitate information exchange about specific, key policies from multiple perspectives, including those of researchers, local and state administrators, program officers and administrators, foundation officials, practitioners, and the public at large. The 2008 roundtable, held in Milwaukee, focused on policies related to supporting low-wage workers and their children.
