Complex trauma exposure (physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, domestic violence) can impact several areas of mental health such as behavioral, emotional and cognitive
difficulties due to its chronic nature. Children with this complex trauma exposure exhibit more traumatic stress and mental health symptoms, risk behaviors, and day-to-day functioning difficulties, and fewer strengths compared to other children. A wide-range of research is currently analyzing both the age-appropriate treatment and interventions along with a better diagnostic classification to capture the complex trauma needs among children. We know there are significant consequences for not treating complex trauma exposure that can greatly impact the adult persona in later years.
