B405 – Emergent Literacy with New Language Learners

3 Credit Hours

This course is designed to help students examine the definition
of what it means to read and write; recognize and
describe developmental stages in learning to read and write;
describe and identify different factors that influence learning
to read and write; and design and implement an emergent
curriculum in a culturally and linguistically diverse
early childhood classroom. The course will focus on the role
of parents and teachers in promoting literacy development
in early childhood classrooms, the relationship between oral
and written language, and the role of high quality multicultural
literature and story telling in emergent literacy.
