The U-Pass program is offered by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) to all full-time students at Chicago’s universities and colleges. The program enables you to travel on CTA buses and trains at a discounted fare.
You will be issued a Ventra U-Pass card which will be valid for your entire academic career, or up to five years. During off-times between semesters, the card can be used as a regular Ventra card, allowing you to add value to your card at any train station or online at www.ventrachicago.com. The card includes your name and photo.
Returning students: The U-Pass benefit is automatically loaded onto the cards of all qualifying students.
New students: Pick up your U-Pass one week after taking your student ID photo. You will receive an email when it is available for pick up from the Registration and Student Records Office.
For information on validity periods and distribution, visit the U-Pass page on my.erikson.
The CTA U-Pass is available to students who meet the following criteria:
- Must be enrolled in a degree or certificate program that is offered at Erikson’s Chicago campus. NOTE: Students-at-large or students enrolled in online or off-site programs are not eligible for a U-Pass.
- Must be registered for a minimum of 6 credit hours in the fall and spring terms or 4 credits in the summer term.
Please note that there is no opting out of the U-Pass program. If you qualify, you will be issued a Ventra U-Pass per the CTA.
Lost or stolen U-Pass
You can apply for a replacement Ventra U-Pass card with Stacy Branch, Erikson’s U-Pass coordinator, in the Registration and Student Records Office. You will need to present your Erikson student I.D. and pay the $50 replacement fee, which will later be sent to the CTA.
A replacement Ventra card will be issued and sent to Stacy within 5 to 7 business days in most cases. The CTA will replace lost or stolen U-Pass cards only once per academic semester. Upon receipt of the replacement card, you will be notified via email to pick up the card in Office 312.
Defective, damaged, or demagnetized U-Pass
If the CTA fare equipment on a bus cannot read a Ventra U-Pass card, the bus operator will allow you to complete the ride for free. At CTA rail stations, present the defective Ventra card to the customer assistant to have it inspected.
A replacement can be ordered for free the first time for defective cards, with charges for any subsequent replacements. In order to replace a defective Ventra card, you will need to contact the Registration and Student Records Office. A replacement U-Pass will be issued and sent to Stacy Branch, Erikson’s U-Pass coordinator, within 5 to 7 business days in most cases. Upon receipt of the replacement card, you will be notified via email to pick up the card in Office 312 and asked to turn in the defective card.
