Child's first school experience is pivotal, says Hynes-Berry
Senior instructor Mary Hynes-Berry appeared on an episode of WYCC PBS Chicago’s The Professors, discussing whether preschool should be mandatory.
“A child’s first school experience is pivotal,” Hynes-Berry says, because it establishes his attitude toward school going forward.
However, requiring preschool can be problematic depending on the curriculum.
In preschool, “children should be free to play and explore,” she says. But many preschool programs today mandate curricula that take away from creativity and language learning.
