President Samuel J. Meisels was interviewed by Education Week about a federal proposal to fund states’ kindergarten assessment programs.

The assessments could be used for high-stakes decisions, such as which preschool a kindergartener will attend.

Meisels cautions that the assessments should measure children’s ability to acquire skills, not current knowledge, as the latter doesn’t reliably predict future success.

He also questions the timing of the proposed federal grant, as 14 states in the Early Learning Challenge grant program are currently creating their own assessments for young children.
