Manage holiday gift expectations through communication, says Nickels

Photo of Margret Nickels smilingMargret Nickels, director of the Center for Children and Families, was quoted in a Chicago Tribune article about how parents can manage their child’s expectations when the wish list is filled with expensive electronics.

For younger children, Nickels suggests telling them Santa’s limitations in delivering every child’s every wish. For older children, she recommends a more candid approach, explaining how parents have to prioritize their spending.

She also suggests buying fewer but more meaningful gifts, adding, “Kids get all these gifts, but in the end, it’s usually only one or two they end up playing with.”
