Transforming pre-k to third-grade education in Chicago’s schools

Language and Literacy Partners works with Chicago Public Schools to offer a professional development system of support that strengthens school administrator and teacher practices in oral language and literacy development in pre-kindergarten through third-grade classrooms. Our goal is to ensure that all young children have a strong start in learning to read and write, and experiencing the power and rewards of learning with others in school.

We advance children’s oral language and literacy proficiency by providing young children with:

  • Intellectually challenging teaching and learning activities.
  • Caring, inclusive classroom communities.
  • Developmentally supportive instructional practices.
  • Assessments of their progress to guide teaching decisions.

We also integrate family and cultural connections in learning experiences and use the children’s home language and dialects as a bridge to academic language and school discourse patterns.
